Sunstone: Personal Strength & Power to Shine like the Sun!

THE FACTS

Sunstone is an oligioclase feldspar mineral with a Mohs hardness of 6 – 6.5. Its chemical composition is (Ca,Na)((Al,Si)2Si2O8). It is initially formed in molten lava and is brought up to the surface by volcanic eruptions.

The color is usually orange to reddish brown with sparkling inclusions, but occasionally they can be blue, green, or yellow. The glittery effect is caused by mineral inclusions of Hematite or Goethite, also known as Aventurescence. Because the inclusions give the stone an aventurine-like appearance, it is also known as Aventurine Feldspar. The color of the stone is ultimately determined by the amount of Copper it contains.

The name Sunstone comes from its warm color and reflected light, reminiscent of the sun. It is found in India, Canada, Norway, Russia, USA, and most recently Africa. It became the official gemstone of Oregon in 1987.

A LITTLE HISTORY

The Ancient Egyptians associated Sunstone to the sun god Ra because of its “light” qualities- warmth, openness, strength, goodwill, and clarity.

In Ancient Greece, Sunstone was prized for its beauty and was worn as jewelry. Because it was thought to counteract poison, it was used to decorate goblets and plates. It was also believed to bring physical strength and stamina to those who ate or drank from these pieces.

Native American tribes valued sunstone, trading it and using it in Medicine Wheel ceremonies throughout Western America. It has been found in many burial sites & in sacred healing bundles.
